retroact 1.0 - an ambient oldies mix (MP3)
All the music in this mix, retroact 1.0, is at least 10 years old. Structures from Silence is from 1984! The Aphex Twin cut is from 1994. I cheated with a couple of tracks, such as Tollefson & Vidna/Pearce, that are from 1999. Other ambient artists included are Saul Stokes, Thom Brennan, Biosphere, Brian Eno and more. After a very long absence I am finally posting a new mix--light cycles. I love repetition in music–-music that uses the constant repetition of notes or themes or sounds as a basic structure to the composition. I wanted to put together a mix where all of the pieces used repetition as a major part of the cut. I also wanted to use pieces that had an “ambient” feel to them but that also were bright or upbeat. The title of the mix was inspired by the movie Tron. light cycles starts out fairly slow and quiet but becomes more vibrant as it goes along. Near the end it almost rocks out with an amazing piece I stumbled across by Can. The Can piece Future Days uses repetition to great effect. This piece is also cool because it was done back in 1973 but still sounds amazingly contemporary. I hope you enjoy light cycles. Like the last several mixes it is somewhat of a departure from the typical ambient drift and drone but I think it still evokes “ambient-ness” throughout the piece. Tracklisting, links, cover art and music score available on my blog (see Source below).

I don't really like berlin school music much anymore. I used to love that style. The first electronic music that I bought was Tangerine Dream & Jean Michel Jarre. I liked both of those artists for a long time. Eventually I think I just became bored with that style of electronic music. Recently, however, I've been re-discovering some berlin-type music. It started with the latest Steve Roach release, Arc of Passion. I've been enjoying the album quite a bit so I dug up some other berlin school or nearly berlin tunes to throw into a mix. Of course there is a cut from Arc of Passion as well as another Roach tune, "Sundial", which I absolutely love. Add in some old T-Dream, Klaus Schulze, Richard Pinhas(3 tunes) and I'm good to go. The Tangerine Dream cuts are from an old cassette that I had of "Hyperborea" which I used to play constantly 10 to 15 years ago. The mix also includes Arp, Solvent, Detroit Escalator Co. & Robert Rich.

A mixtape of sad songs. While I was gathering music for my Desolation Angels mix, I was originally going to have both vocal and instrumental tracks. Once I started putting it together, however, I felt that having a mix of just instrumental and operatic cuts was best. So, I decided to put all of the vocal tracks left over from Desolation Angels together in their own mix which became Tears in Rain. The title is taken from the film Blade Runner. Tracklisting, links, cover art and music score available on my blog (see Source below). This mix is dedicated to my friend Katie, gone too long.

There were some excellent releases in 2007, so I thought I'd feature some in a new mix. My favorite ambient recording of the year was Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline. I know there are quite a few people who didn't care for the cd, but I love it. I like the more orchestral feel. I like that SOTL relies less & less on synths. A beautiful record. Artists in this mix include Paul Bradley, Eneralds, Adam Pacione, Northern, Dakota Suite, Tim Hecker, Taylor Deupree, Alio Die, Rameses III, Kiln and more.

I wish I could drown the world in reverberation (MP3)
This new mix is all guitar based music. I decided to do a new guitar mix because I seem to have come across a lot of good guitar music lately. I stole the title from a track that appears in the mix by twinsistermoon. All the tracks on this mix are new, from either 2006 or 2007. Artists include Robert Fripp, Meursault, Oren Armbachi, Wooden Spoon, Christopher Flores, Peter Wright and more. Some is ambient, some is pretty, some is droney(is that a word?), all of it laid back. I hope you enjoy it.
Genres: acoustic, ambient, atmospheric, chill, chillout, electro-acoustic, guitar
I've gone on another binge of downloading music from netlabels. You know how the net is...one link leads you to another and then another and another and the next thing you know, you've download 10 free releases. Free is obviously a huge attraction for most netlabel releases. With some of the recordings, it's a good thing they are free. It's not that they are bad, just that I probably won't come back to them again and again in the future. However, some releases are very good. Nest, released earlier this year on Serein is an excellent recording. Marsen Jules has two Autoplate releases, Yara & Lazy Sunday Funerals, which I highly recommend. I haven't really had time to digest all the new music yet, but I thought I'd put together a quick mix using all netlabel albums that I've downloaded in the last couple of weeks.
